Connecting up

Plugging in an indoor aerial is pretty straightforward, but positioning it could take time and practice. Go to indoor aerials for our step-by-step help.

It's simpler with digital boxes and digital TVs. Once plugged in and connected to that well-positioned aerial, they more or less tune themselves - but for help with where the SCART leads go, see set top box and digital TV recorders or iDTVS.

And if you plan to record programmes from all the new digital channels you can get, see recording options.

Locking up
Occasionally digital systems freeze and stop responding to their remote control. A bit annoying but easy to solve – just unplug the iDTV or set top box from the mains, wait for about 30 seconds and reconnect it. Allow the system to start up again in its own time (this can take about a minute) and then it should be sorted out. Manufacturers from time to time have a firmware upgrade broadcast to deal with this.

and lost channels...
Sometimes broadcasters add channels or change frequencies. Industry is working on automatic re-tuning systems, but from time to time you might need to re-tune your iDTV. Use the re-tuning or re-scanning option in the on-screen setup or installation menu and follow the instructions there. Re-tuning may take a minute or two. When analogue switch-off happens in your area, there are likely to be significant frequency changes on the digital transmissions.
