Types of TV

What is High Definition TV (HDTV) and will my ‘HD ready TV’ get HD when it’s broadcast?
To find out more about higher definition broadcasts see Jargon Buster.

No you will need a suitable satellite or cable HD set top box, digital TV recorder or a TV that has an in-built HD tuner (freesat or Freeview). For more information see Digital TVs.

What is internet TV?
Internet TV gives you the opportunity to access a limited number of internet based applications on your TV through your home network. Some manufacturers offer only a few applications while others offer an opportunity to download many more. There may also be a selection of games and general information applications (news, weather, etc) available. However, we have found that web browsing is not particularly easy on a TV, particularly when using the remote control for navigation.

About 3D TV
To view 3D programmes or films you will need a TV that has the 3D technology built in. Currently only a few TV programmes are broadcast each day, the Blu-ray selection of 3D films is also limited. It is also important to note that to view a 3D Blu-ray DVD in 3, you will need a 3D Blu-ray player, as well as a 3D TV.

In order to view 3D programmes or films you have to wear special glasses that synchronise with the TV picture. Most manufactures supply these glasses, they tend to be fairly bulky to wear and cost around £100 per pair.

Tests on 3D TVs have shown performance differs between brands. While some viewers have been impressed with the technology, some have found the 3D effect uncomfortable to watch and the glasses uncomfortable to wear for any length of time.

What are CRT, plasma or LCD?
For an explanation of these different types of TVs, see Digital TVs.
