Energy saving
We have measured the power consumption of all the set top boxes, digital TV recorders and iDTVs tested, both in use and in standby mode. See the individual summary test reports for details.
We have also tested a range of standby energy devices. These aim to save energy by switching off a number of products in one go. See Standby devices.
You can sort all products by their in use power consumption.

Saving Recommended logo
This logo was developed by the Energy Saving Trust, to
help consumers spot the most energy efficient products. These products
cost less to run because they use less energy. By reducing energy use, you can help
protect the environment. Our summary test reports show you which
products have applied for and been granted the Energy Saving Recommended
logo. For more information on the Energy Saving Trust go to Contacts.

Information on running costs
The sust-it website provides hourly/daily/yearly running costs of thousands of household electronic products.
Costs are calculated using the manufacturers’ published power consumption data, the average usage figures and the UK’s average electricity tariff. You can also put in your own electricity tariff to show you how money a year you could save. For more information see Sust-it.net.
Can I switch off or unplug at night?
You can switch off almost any set top box or digital TV recorder at the wall or pull the plug out every night and this will save electricity. The only disadvantage is you will need to wait for a few minutes when you switch on again. This is because the on-screen TV guide needs to be re-filled with all the programme information. Some boxes, and in particular the Sky boxes, take a minute or two to power up before you get a picture and then another minute or two to re-build the on-screen TV guide. And of course don't unplug a recorder if it's set to record a later programme.
If you subscribe to extra services, like Top Up TV, you also have to leave the box switched on. To be on the safe side, check the instruction manual.
It is not a good idea to leave any boxes switched off for extended periods as they may miss some software updates that might be broadcast to improve performance – see updates.
