Energy saving

We have measured the power consumption of all the set top boxes, digital TV recorders and iDTVs tested, both in use and in standby mode. See the individual summary test reports for details.

You can use the Product Search to rank products by their standby power consumption.

This logo was developed by the Energy Saving Trust, to help consumers spot the most energy efficient products. These products cost less to run because they use less energy. Most of the UK’s energy comes from fossil fuels. This produces carbon emissions which contribute to climate change. By reducing energy use, you can help protect the environment. Our sumary test reports show you which products have applied for and been granted the Energy Saving Recommended logo.

Can I switch off or unplug at night?

You can switch off almost any set top box or digital TV recorder at the wall or pull the plug out every night and this will save electricity. The only disadvantage is you will need to wait for a few minutes when you switch on again. This is because the on-screen TV guide needs to be re-filled with all the programme information. Some boxes, and in particular the Sky boxes, take a minute or two to power up before you get a picture and then another minute or two to re-build the on-screen TV guide. And of course don't unplug a recorder if it's set to record a later programme.

Of the boxes we have tested, some made by Digifusion must be kept powered up overnight to receive regular on-screen TV guide information. If you subscribe to extra services, like Top Up TV Anytime, you also have to leave the box switched on. To be on the safe side, check the instruction manual.

It is not a good idea to leave any boxes switched off for extended periods as they may miss some software updates that might be broadcast to improve performance – see updates.
