Extra TVs

Any TV you want to carry on using after switchover – and any that you want to watch digital channels on now – will need to be adapted. Depending on where you live and how you use your TVs, you may be able to make different choices for your main and other TVs.

If your family want to be able to watch different programmes in different rooms at the same time:

  • and you can receive digital terrestrial, buy individual set top boxes for each TV. You could buy cheaper boxes for the TVs you use least, without all the features that come with pricier boxes. You can mix and match of course – for example get an iDTV as your main TV, and set top boxes for the rest. See also aerial extensions.
  • if you go digital with satellite or cable, the companies offer multiroom options with extra boxes and an extra subscription per TV. They install all the kit. Contact the companies for details (Digital TV providers) and look out for special offers to get a good deal.
  • with Homechoice you need an extra phone line and pay extra subscriptions for each TV – again they do the installations.
  • you could pay just once for Freesat for a second TV – see Satellite channels.

If you are happy having the same programme fed to all TVs in your house then you have another choice:

  • if you get digital terrestrial TV with a rooftop aerial in one room, you can distribute the signal around the house with a video sender.
