Test methods

All the iDTVs went through a rigorous and tightly controlled test procedure.

These tests showed

• how easy the product was to use
• what features each model had, and how well it worked
• whether the quality of picture and sound was satisfactory
• the energy consumption of each model - in standby and in use.

Technical measurements and practical viewing and listening tests were carried out, using the digital tuner and a DVD player, to check sound and picture quality and synchronisation. The technical tests are for technical accuracy (see the more information summaries) but this does not tell the full story. The practical viewing and listening results (in the product summaries) show how good the picture looks and how good the TV sounds. When viewing, we look for true colour balance, natural skin tone and detail and depth in the picture. When listening, we want natural sounds close to the original – not too harsh, not hollow and without irritating processing noises.

Features were systematically noted and checked with manufacturers. Each was checked to find out if it worked to the parameters claimed. Information on up to 400 different features was recorded about each iDTV.

Ease of use assessments were made by a panel of three experts. All are experts in their field, which include the technical side of audio visual equipment, ergonomics and user interfaces, and the special needs of older and disabled people. Between them they have over 50 years experience of consumer product testing and carrying out detailed assessments with users.

The usability assessment covers specific situations likely to be encountered in practice and takes into account the likely level of expertise different consumers have. The guide used by the assessors is itself based on the cumulative experience of laboratory and assessment staff and their knowledge of users, ergonomic research and recent tests on digital TV equipment carried out with disabled and older people. It includes such scenarios as initial installation, everyday use by all members of the household, advanced use by a keen user and use if the remote control is lost. It takes about three hours to assess the ease of use of each iDTV.
